David De Gea levert interessante managementcase op.

David de Gea, ongetwijfeld getalenteerd goalkeeper in dienst van Manchester United en beoogd opvolger van Iker Casillas tot nu toe No. 1 in het Spaans elftal, is terecht gekomen in een interessante managementcasus.

De Gea wilde weg bij ManUnited (of was het bij Louis van Gaal?). Wat doet een werknemer of i.i.g. een voetballer dan? Hij 'gooit de kont tegen de krib': werkweigering om zo de vurig gewenste transfer af te dwingen. Werkweigering kan ook interessant zijn voor de overnemer c.q. koper want je waarde daalt met de dag. Niets leek dan ook een overstap naar Real Madrid nog in de weg staan; leek.....

Tot dat de FIFA roet in het eten gooide door een vernieuwde High Tech overdracht procedure genaamd Transfer Matching System, of zit het toch anders in elkaar? Hoe dan ook: interessant!

"Fifa introduced online registration to replace a fax-based system prone to overload and corruption. Yet the promise of technology is often confounded by human error: I picture smug Spanish soccer impresarios furiously stabbing at the keyboard, mistyping their Fifa passwords again and again, and hurling Castilian curses at the screen as vital seconds tick by." aldus het humoristisch commentaar van Financial Times columnist Andrew Hill in zijn bijdrage 'Fifa’s transfer window: A paperwork own-goal'. Toch kun je de FIFA hierin niet alles verwijten.

'Wat er aan vooraf ging': na zijn vakantie liet David de Gea duidelijk merken aan zijn manager Louis van Gaal ('wie anders, in een soap als deze', ga je bijna denken ;-) ), dat hij weg wilde en wel naar zijn 'droomteam' Real Madrid! Wat 'Von Genial' vervolgens besluit is logisch: hij stelt De Gea niet meer op zelfs al is De Gea's vervanger Sergio Romero zichtbaar van een goede maar toch iets mindere kwaliteit. Van Gaal's illustere voorganger Sir Alex Ferguson deed iets vergelijkbaars met zowel Jaap Stam als met Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Lees je de berichten die gisteren verschenen, de 'transferdeadline' was maandagmiddernacht, dan 'verwijt de pot de ketel': zowel de Mancunians als de Koninklijken 'vegen hun straatje schoon' in deze miljoenendeal. Een synopsis uit de persberichten, ze lezen als een thriller:

Eerst Real Madrid:

"Following yesterday's events in relation to the intended signing of the player David de Gea, Real Madrid wishes to state:

1.  Manchester United did not open any channel of negotiation over the federative rights of David de Gea until yesterday morning. (Daarvoor is ook iets te zeggen: je geeft de indruk dat als het aan jou ligt De Gea niet weg hoeft..... D.i. ook een kwestie van de prijs beïnvloeden)
2. Real Madrid and Manchester United quickly reached an agreement for the transfers of both players (NB; bij de deal inbegrepen zat goallie Keylor Navas. In het voetbal is dit heel normaal, voor het bedrijfsleven kan het een interessante optie zijn: 'jullie die van ons, wij die van jullie')  Following the drawing up of the relevant contractual documentation required, and with the purpose of proceeding with enough time to process both FIFA's Transfer Matching System (TMS) and the registration with the Liga de Fútbol Profesional, Real Madrid sent Manchester United the contracts at 13.39 Spanish time.
3. Real Madrid, having obtained the signatures of the players De Gea and Keylor Navas, sent the British club the aforementioned signed contracts at 23:32 Spanish time, before waiting to receive the final documents signed by Manchester United.
4. Manchester United entered the details of the David de Gea deal, not those of Keylor Navas, at 00:00 Spanish time, simultaneously sending Real Madrid the signed transfer contracts. Real Madrid received this complete documentation at 00:02 and attempted to access the TMS, but it was now closed. 
5. At 00:26 Spanish time, FIFA's TMS invited Real Madrid to fill out the details of the player David de Gea, as the period of registration in England remains open until today. Real Madrid, given the possibility of an administrative dispute over the player's transfer, decided to send the contracts to the Liga de Fútbol Profesional, despite the knowledge that the deadline had passed.
6. In short, Real Madrid did everything necessary at all times to complete both transfers." 

De reactie van Manchester United:

"Manchester United notes Real Madrid’s statement on the attempt to sign David De Gea and sell Navas to Manchester United. The club feels compelled to provide some clarification with the following facts. 

1. Manchester United did not seek contact from Real Madrid for the sale of David. David is a key member of our squad and the club’s preference was not to sell.
2. At lunchtime yesterday, Real Madrid made its first offer to buy David. A deal was agreed between the clubs, which included Navas being transferred to Old Trafford. The deals were dependent on each other.
3. Manchester United sent transfer documents for both players to Real Madrid at 20:42 BST. David’s documentation was returned by Real Madrid to Manchester United without the signatory page at 22:32 BST.
4. Only at 22:55 BST were the documents that are needed to cancel David’s contract received by Manchester United from Real Madrid.
5. At 22:58 BST, the transfer agreement was sent back by Manchester United, uploaded onto TMS and accepted – all before the deadline.
6. The fact that Manchester United filed the papers on time was acknowledged by the Football Association, who offered to support that claim in any discussions with FIFA. The club offered this assistance, as well as its own timestamped documents to Real Madrid but they have chosen not to go down this route."

De slotzin in het persbericht zegt ook veel: "Manchester United acts appropriately and efficiently in its transfer dealings. The club is delighted that its fan-favourite double Player of the Year, David de Gea, remains a Manchester United player." Mooi maar deze hele soap lijkt een nieuwe richting te geven aan wat leek op een voorspoedige carrière van David de Gea.

Lessons learned:

• Wil een talent weg: laat hem/haar gaan: 'stel 'm niet meer op'. Als je commitment weg is, waarom zou ik je dan ook nog inzetten? Zo heb ik weinig fiducie in opzegtermijnen, dergelijke weken/maanden lijken vaak op een langdurige afscheidstournee en leiden zelden tot extra inzet van degene die vertrekt;
• Als je concurrent een talent van je overneemt, kijk dan eens wat je bij hen kan weghalen; LinkedIn is daarbij een mooi hulpmiddel;
• Leer communiceren, leer onderhandelen; leer eventueel je talen en verdiep je in culturen;
• Wacht bij cruciale acties niet tot het laatst;
• Zorg, zeker bij nieuwe systemen, voor een back up; desnoods stuur je een fax;
• Maak beslissingsbevoegden tech savvy of delegeer het omgaan met disruptieve technologieën;
• Houd rekening met de verschillende tijdszones;
• en bovenal: relativeer!   :-)
